You have an amazing story to tell—and it feels like you’re almost there. So how do you take it to the next level? For writers at this stage, the greatest need is often a keen editorial eye.

With extensive experience writing fiction and nonfiction, critiquing, and working with other authors—including as the editor of the award-winning anthology Denver Noir—I've developed a strong sense of why some narratives hit the mark while others need further revision.

Like many authors, I partner with a developmental editor for my own bestselling novels, and the experience is always instrumental in successfully launching a high-quality book into the world, leading to a robust following of satisfied fans. When it comes to creating high-quality narratives, nothing compares to having a fresh, professional eye on your manuscript.

“Cynthia’s edits are specific, insightful, and—most importantly—clearly show her understanding of the author’s creative intention. I never feel like Cynthia pushes me away from my vision or style. On the contrary, with her help, my pieces get closer and closer to the best, most authentic versions of themselves.”
- Mathangi Subramanian, author and Denver Noir contributor

What does a developmental editor do? In a nutshell, a developmental editor provides a high-level review of your manuscript, pointing out key areas for improvement.

When is the right time for a developmental edit? When you've done one or more of the following:

  • Workshopped the manuscript with an instructor and other writers

  • Incorporated feedback from beta readers

  • Revised and polished your manuscript

  • Begun researching/planning an agent search, publisher search, and/or the independent or hybrid publishing process

"Cynthia's editorial eye is brilliant. Her vision as to my audience has been hugely helpful. At Muse & the Marketplace, the response to my pitch was universally received with enthusiasm. I now have several agents interested in reading my book."
- Scott Andrew, editing client

“I’ve worked with a lot of editors during my career, and Cynthia’s skills are exemplary. She knows what’s needed to take a novel or short story to the next level. She provides feedback with kindness and empathy, offering suggestions from a place of deep understanding of what makes a story great—from theme and structure to pacing and characters.”
